CURRENT Wiltshire champion Eddie Roofe completed a double triumph at the Ken Hawkes Swindon Closed Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday, by scooping the men's singles title and the over 40 singles crown.

Roofe, pictured, saw off the challenge of Ray Hughes in both finals to take the accolades. The singles final was won comfortably in straight sets, but the over 40's final was much more challenging.

Hughes was unable to capitalise on a deserved 10-7 lead in the final set and Roofe saved several more match points with some strong attacking play before edging the close struggle 17-15.

There was also double success for Tracey Hicks as she won the ladies singles and over 40 singles, both staged in an all-play-all format.

The event, held at New College Sports Hall, was named in memory of Ken Hawkes, who died last year.

Hawkes was a great supporter of Swindon table tennis and enjoyed playing over many decades.

The Division 2&3 Handicap singles started with four groups of three, with 12 players progressing to the next round.

The final brought together sisters Roz Deakin and Chris Manson, with Deakin taking the title in straight sets.

Peter Epps took the honours in both doubles categories. Having already won the men's doubles with Dino Ciorra, Epps teamed up with Andy Hurley to take the closely contested veteran doubles title.

The experienced pairing of Alan Duke and Tracey Hicks were runners-up in both of the day's doubles events.

In the Under 18 Boys Singles final, some some strong attacking play saw Thomas Jeffcott save several set points in the fourth end before overcoming favourite Ethan Gunton to clinch the title.
