CIRENCESTER Rugby Club’s youth department celebrated the end of the season with its rugby sevens tournament at the Whiteway.

Teams from every age group between Under 11s and Under 18s took part in the event, in which matches lasted 10 minutes.

In the Under 11 age group, Cirencester played well to notch up a close win in the D&J Sports Shield final against Phoenix, with Dursley winning the Plate in their final game against Minety.

Iwon Thomas was Cirencester Under 11s’ player of the tournament.

In the Under 12s, Stroud demolished Dursley in the John Sawyer Trophy final but Cirencester came through to win the Plate against Stow.

Will Bannister was voted Cirencester Under 12s’ player of the tournament by the referees.

At Under 13s level, Keiran Kelly of Cirencester won the Mike Clapton player of the tournament award, as Ciren won their final against Stow. Bredon Buzzards lifted the Plate having despatched arch rivals Dursley.

Bredon Buzzards showed the way in the Alder King Under 14s Shield final as they beat Cirencester, with Stow winning the Plate against Keynsham. Ciren Under 14s’ player of the tournament was Jo Gale.

In the girls’ section, Miren - a collection of players from Minety, Cirencester and Supermarine - proved too strong for the visitors from Chipping Sodbury, Melksham and Cinderford.

Alice Luce was awarded the John Sawyer Trophy for the best player in the Under 15s girls’ team that won the Relish Trophy.

Adrianne Blair was awarded the second John Sawyer Trophy as the best Under 18s player and her team lifted the Somewhere Else Trophy as overall victors.

In the older boys’ sections, Cirencester convincingly won the Alder King Under 15s Shield, beating Marling School in the final. Stow picked up the Plate against Dursley.

Cirencester’s Mitch Dibley won the Carter Shield as the best Under 15s player in the tournament.

At Under 16s level, St Josephs, Cardiff won a tight final for The Halcrow Group Shield against Clifton whilst Hucclecote won the Plate.

The Kevin McQuillon Memorial Trophy went to Will Collins as Cirencester’s player of the tournament.

In the Under 17s Hugh Evans Memorial Shield final, while Hucclecote were victorious over Swindon.

Cirencester showed their skills to win the Plate by demolishing Old Cryptians. The Bridges-Bevan Cup for Cirencester Under 17s’ best player was presented to Tom Finnie.

Peter Barefoot, of Cirencester Rugby Club, was delighted with the overall outcome of the event.

“There have been some great displays of teamwork that have descended today on this club and made this event so special,” he said.

“I have just seen some marvellous rugby played. Well done.”
