JOHN Godsell wants his Supermarine side to secure promotion in style by winning their last three games of the season.
Following a 31-17 success over Avonvale on Saturday, Marine can win promotion in their next game against if they secure a bonus-point victory over a lowly Bath Saracens side who prop up the Dorset 1 Wilts 1 North table.
But director of rugby Godsell has his sights set on overhauling Swindon 2nds in second place in a bid to keep his players motivated until the end of the season.
“It is looking pretty good for us at the moment, and the game against Bath will be almost a given because they are really struggling in the league.,” he said. “They are bottom of the league and we will be looking for a bonus-point win which will take us up.
“But our real target is to overhaul Swindon 2nds, who we should have beaten home and away this season, and if we can do that I will be very pleased.
“We want to win our last three games and go up in style, but seconds are also challenging for promotion so if we could both go up that would be great for the club.”
Godsell was happy with the victory over Avonvale, in which Matt Dickens and Alan Minton both scored twice, but insisted the game was much closer than the scoreline suggested.
“They are a good side who have been improving throughout the season really, and they were certainly better than when we last played them,” he said.
“We played well to win and we put in a good performance, but it was closer than the result suggests.”
Elsewhere in Dorset & Wilts 1 North, Minety let a 20-7 lead slip to eventually lose 21-20 against Bradford on Avon.
The visitors raced into a 15-7 lead at half time thanks to tries from Robin Greenway and Jonty Messer, before Tom Fitzcharles added another after the break.
Bradford began to make inroads, and a Minety clearance kick which failed to find touch and gave the home team the chance they needed as Matt Edwards ran back to touch down.
Bradford struck again before Edwards struck a penalty to win the game for his side.
Fairford lost 64-12 at Calne.
Supermarine Ladies also enjoyed an impressive weekend as they ran in eight tries on their way to a superb 46-0 away victory at Devizes.
Sean Millwaters’ team produced a superb all-round team performance to see off their county rivals, after number eight Claire Chard got them on their way with an early try.
The visitors continued to play some excellent rugby, and more tries soon followed through flanker Amelia Buckland-Hurry and backs Candy Inskip, Corinne Hunter, Natalie Walker and Natalie Williams. Williams also added three conversions to keep the points total ticking over.
Some solid tackling by Supermarine helped prevent their opponents from getting anywhere near to the try line, and they also ran some great lines to make the home side work hard to gain possession.
Supermarine fielded a couple of new players, with Charlie Wing amongst those making her debut for the club.
