SUPERMARINE director of rugby John Godsell has admitted he is in the dark over what route his side will have to take to win promotion from Dorset & Wilts 1 North this season.
Marine are currently the leading candidates for promotion due to the fact they are the best placed first team, and a bonus-point victory over lowly Bath Saracens tomorrow will seal their position.
But that is when the situation becomes unclear, and Godsell admitted any one of three routes is still possible.
Supermarine could go straight up, face a promotion play-off against a team from Dorset & Wilts 1 South, or even enter into a new Premier League, which the RFU are thought to be discussing.
“It really isn’t clear to be honest, which is typical really,” he said.
“We could go straight up, but there are rumours of a play-off and talk of a new Premier League which would really improve the standard of rugby in the area in my opinion, but we will have to wait and see about that one.
“Whatever route we have to take to promotion will be positive for Supermarine because we will be moving forward as a club, and whatever route we take we will be looking to go with an aggressive recruitment policy over the summer as we try to move the club forward and make it as professional as possible.
“Whichever way we have to go our focus is now on overhauling Swindon 2nds in second place, and I think we have a good chance of being able to do that because we are playing well at the moment.”
Tomorrow’s opponents currently prop up the table with -11 points, and Godsell is fully expecting a comfortable victory for his side.
“In all honesty I would like to think we would record a good victory pretty comfortably, and that it would be a bit of a given,” he said.
“But saying that, we have all seen many times how teams with nothing to lose travel to higher ranked opposition and put in that little bit extra effort and play with freedom, and ultimately come away with the win.
“I have massive respect for Bath Saracens because they always give their best and don’t ever fail to attend games when they are unable to put out a full strength side, unlike other teams in this league.
“We have challenged our players to go out in this game and lay down a bench mark for how we are going to perform next season and put their hands up to be part of the team.”
Godsell has a full strength squad to choose from for the fixture, but could also opt to give a number of players from the development squad a chance to impress.
Elsewhere in the division Fairford host Swindon 2nds and Minety take on Calne, while Cricklade play Combe Down in Dorset & Wilts 2 North.
