CAPTAIN Gary Williamson hopes Wootton Bassett’s imminent move to Ballards Ash will help the club go forward in future years.
Bassett were unable to sign off with victory in their final league assignment at their Stoneover Lane base, Dave Hogg kicking two penalties and converting Dan McCarthy’s try as the hosts were sunk 43-13 by visitors Grove in Southern Counties North.
Williamson said: “It’s not the way we would have wanted to finish there, but it was a good day in terms of people being at the club.
“Our new facilities are not all finished yet, but we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully it will help us attract a few more players and be an inviting place to play."
A final celebration match is planned at Stoneover Lane on May 26 to wave goodbye to the ground that has served as their home since the 1984/85 season.
Elsewhere, Chippenham secured an impressed 34-29 win at Old Redcliffians in National League 3 South West, to consolidate their place in midtable.
In South West 1 East, Swindon lost 30-16 at Marlow, who are leading the chase for third place in the division.
The most impressive victory of the weekend went to Swindon College Old Boys, who triumphed 25-20 against table-toppers Drifters in the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier.
Cricklade were on the end of a 22-10 defeat to Combe Down in Dorset & Wilts 2 North.
- SWINDON Under 13s recorded a memorable 36-29 win over Melksham in the cup.
Among the try scorers were Swindon’s right-wing (2), Joey Toogood from the base of the scrum and Josh Jones with a superb solo effort.
Oli Walsh was on target with the kicking tee on more than one occasion, while Jones slotted a conversion between the post.
The man of the match was Charlie Humphreys who gave a tireless display at flanker.
Elsewhere, the under 14s won 36-10 against Minety.
