SUPERMARINE director of rugby John Godsell blamed his side’s 25-10 defeat at Bradford on Avon on his players ‘switching off and going to sleep.’ Marine went into an early 10-0 lead but let it slip, much to Godsell’s disappointment.

“We started well and took an early lead, but from then on I think the players just switched off and went to sleep.

“We knew Bradford would be a better side than the one we faced earlier in the season, and so it proved, and we just did not do enough to beat them.”

Elsewhere in Dorset & Wilts 1 North, Fairford lost 79-0 at Trowbridge 2nds.

There was also defeat for Supermarine Ladies, who lost 33-28 at home to Bristol.

Claire Chard scored four tries as Marine battled back from a big deficit, but ultimately missed out.

“We let ourselves down in the first 20 minutes and gave away stupid points,” said coach Sean Millwaters.

“We even gave away a try at half time but a good team talk saw us turn the game around and I couldn’t ask any more of the team in the second half.”

Bristol took the lead after six minutes, but soon gave away a penalty which Natalie Williams kicked for Marine.

The visitors extended their lead before the break with three more easy tries, but Marine grabbed one back through number eight Chard to reduce the deficit to 28-8.

The home side came alive after the break as the magnificant Chard scored three more tries to haul her side back into an entertaining match.

Bristol scored again to extend the lead, and although Williams added a fifth for Marine, it was not enough for them to come away with victory despite late pressure, which saw them go close on a number of occasions.
