SWINDON rounded off their home campaign in tremendous style with a thumping 101-7 victory over bottom side Olney.
The 17-try victory at Greenbridge Road saw Neil Loader’s side move back into fourth place in the South West 1 East table with one game remaining, and came courtesy of four tries from Charlie Vine, and three each for Mike Thompson and Cory Lotter.
Loader’s side took the lead after only three minutes and then continued to rain in try after try which impressed the coach.
“We were pretty relentless, which was very pleasing,” Loader told the Advertiser.
“We set the players targets throughout the game, and they pretty much hit them all, except for having possesion for 11 of the first 15 minutes.
“I suppose it is a hard one to judge because we do not really know how strong Olney were in terms of selection, but to score 17 tries is an unbelievable thing to do, whoever the opposition.
“But it wasn’t a walk in the park and we did have to work hard at times which in a way was pleasing, but when we attacked we went forward very fast and with precision, which was great to see.
“We felt like we played our natural game, and some of the spectators said at the end that they were really impressed with how we played, and it is obviously good to keep them entertained too.”
Swindon’s final game is away to Buckingham at the weekend, with a win able to take them as high as third, but defeat could result in a finish as low as seventh.
“We always knew what we were capable of this season, but we are pleased to have finally secured a top half finish.
“We need to keep the intensity up between now and the end of the season because we want to finish as high as we can, although we know, but for a few blips, we could have finished a lot higher.”
In contrast to Swindon’s big win, Swindon College Old Boys ground out a 7-0 victory over Chipping Norton in the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier.
The victory in Old Boys’ final game of the season saw them finish sixth in the table.
