EXCITED Alun Rossiter has invited all speedway fans to flock to the new Robins nest after plans for a multi-million pound stadium redevelopment at Blunsdon were given the green light.

The Swindon boss is thrilled at the prospect of moving into a new home for the start of the 2010 Elite League season, and hopes everyone in the town will share his passion for the project.

Rossiter underlined his support for the scheme at a planning meeting on Tuesday night, where councillors voted to approve the plans.

And after hearing the good news, Rosco immediately set his sights on attracting the next generation of speedway fans to the new stadium.

He said: "I was shocked by the number of people who supported our campaign to keep speedway in the town.

"I wish I could get some of these people into the new stadium when it is finally built.

"A lot of people have started coming back to speedway in the last few years and they have really enjoyed it.

"It's a real family sport and I think this stadium will benefit not just Swindon speedway but the town as a whole."

After guiding his team to three finals in 2007, Rossiter is desperate to win some silverware to furnish the club's new trophy cabinet.

With a new stadium and an army of new fans behind them, he believes Swindon will continue to compete with the best in the business.

"This is the only way forward," he said. "The old stadium has had its day. The days of people standing on mounds are gone.

"We're talking about new stands, a clean ground, with better toilet facilities and corporate hospitality.

"We're going to move out of the dark ages. I think this is great news."

To the doubters who questioned whether the Robins can secure a long-term lease on the proposed development, Rossiter made his thoughts perfectly clear.

He said: "It frustrates me when I get emails from people saying we could be kicked out of this new stadium within two years.

"It was made quite clear at the meeting that this move was to secure the long-term future of speedway. We should all be happy with going to the new stadium, not the other way around."

With at least two years of racing left at the Abbey Stadium, Rossiter wants all fans to cherish the memories of the old track, but also to look forward to an exciting new future.

He said: "It's sad in one way that the old stadium has to go, but this is not a short term fix. The planning permission gives us a home for the long term.

"This has been a long and drawn out process, but finally it has all come together.

"I think we've come up with a great solution and anybody who has any fears this won't happen should not worry - we will see it through."

THE Pit Crew Pre-Season Dance takes place at the Crossway Suite on Friday, March 7.

Team boss Alun Rossiter and some of the 2008 Robins will be attending.
