SWINDON Town have signed goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott on a free transfer from Bristol City.
The 24-year-old - whose one-year deal at Town contains a sell-on clause due to him having a year left on his old City contract – becomes Town’s first signing of the summer.
Wollacott played twice for Town last season after being brought in on an emergency loan deal in late February and was expected to stay for the remainder of the season before picking up a knee injury prior to the club’s League One contest with Northampton Town.
The untimely injury meant Archie Matthews was forced to make his Town debut, with the 18-year-old helping Swindon to a 2-1 success.
Wollacott’s debut came in a 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra in which Scott Twine scored a dramatic late winner. The Bristol-born goalkeeper also featured in a credible 2-2 draw away at Lincoln City a few days later.
Speaking to Swindon Town’s website, Wollacott said: “I’m much more at ease now (having played here before). “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while now and it’s definitely the right decision for me.
“The gaffer is ambitious and the most important bit is when you have a manager that believes in your ability, it take the pressure off you a little bit.
“I think if I can emulate those performances (from last season), I’m sure it’ll contribute to a successful season.”
Prior to the 24-year-old’s brief experience at the County Ground, Wollacott went on loan to Forest Green Rovers during the 2019-20 campaign in what was his only experience of the football league in a career at Ashton Gate stretching back to 2013.
The Bristol-born stopper made his debut for Forest Green in a 0–0 draw with Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup, and he saved a penalty from Jake Forster-Caskey in normal time to take the tie to a shoot-out. Wollacott then helped his new team to victory over the Addicks in a 5-3 spot-kick success.
Wollacott had spent most of his time at Bristol City either on the bench or out on loan at various non-league sides.
He now pens a one-year contract at Swindon as the club prepares for life back in League Two following one season away.
Meanwhile, Town have announced a pre-season friendly with Championship side Peterborough United.
Posh will head to the County Ground on Saturday, July 31 for a 3pm kick-off - a week before the EFL season is scheduled to get underway.
