Mark Kennedy and his team could turn the mood music into something far more pleasant if they can do something no Swindon Town team has – win at Cheltenham Town.
Parkin, Cox, Caddis, Luongo, Doughty, Doyle – some of the finest names in the club’s modern history have made their way down the A417 and come back with nothing to show for it. Whaddon Road, The Jonny Rocks Stadium, even The World of Smile Stadium, whatever the name on the door, it hasn’t mattered. Nine trips to Gloucestershire and only three measly draws to show for it.
I can’t imagine any of the current members of the Town squad would even dare to put themselves on the above list, hopefully, there will be time for that, but they could create their own list this weekend and make quite a big difference by the time they return home to face Doncaster Rovers next week.
The Bristol Street Motors Trophy means nothing unless you want it to. First team, second team, under-8 B-team, it doesn’t really matter what Bristol Rovers put out if you can follow up a 4-0 victory with a memorable win in the league straight after.
The first ten games have flitted between maddening and frustrating but Tuesday set up the chance for some cheap momentum to move forward with.
As Mark Kennedy said when asked what that could mean: “In any walk of life winning games is confidence-boosting, so it doesn’t matter who you are, back-to-back wins are huge.
“I would be happier if they were back-to-back league wins, I didn’t have any disappointment from Tuesday other than I wished it was a league game.
“Winning games breeds confidence and no matter how well you are playing or how well you believe you are playing, not winning certainly doesn’t enhance the confidence.
“Winning becomes a habit and part of your culture, so hopefully we can get that.”
On Saturday, the game will be a clash between League Two's 20th and 21st best sides according to the table, with the Gloucestershire outfit having won two more points than Swindon so far.
With a sold-out away allocation and more than 5,000 expected inside the ground, Michael Flynn told club media he was excited for the atmosphere.
He said: “It will be a great atmosphere. The Swindon fans, Newport fans, and Walsall fans – to name the clubs I’ve been at – when they travel in numbers are fantastic and make a lot of noise.
“At Whaddon Road, it is tight and will amplify the volume and I am looking forward to it.”
Much like during his time with Swindon, Flynn has struggled with injuries so far this season, the Welshman said before the match that he didn’t believe he had been able to pick the same team twice so far.
Town have not fared a whole lot better but could have Ollie Clarke and Ryan Delaney back in some capacity after they had a week of full training, even with the absences of Kabongo Tshimanga and Jeff King.
