Why then, with so much talent to draw upon, must we settle for a House of Lords crammed with mediocrities, cronies and superannuated party hacks?

The House of Lords is already bursting with with more than eight times as many members as the US Senate!

Cameron has dragged the Lords yet further into ridicule.
