I FFEL I must add my comments to the ongoing debate about the crossings in Regent Circus.
The old crossings were easy for everyone; pedestrians press the button, traffic stops, wait for the green man and they cross safely.
I, rather foolishly it seems now, assumed once the work was completed the light controlled crossings would be reinstated, as happens in other places. The volume of traffic is too high to allow people, especially older or visually impaired citizens, to play ‘Russian Roulette’ to get across the road, and the ‘Shared Streets’ plan is a most unwise move.
Before the building work started I used these crossings a lot, but I now arrive at the Town Hall by bus or use another walking route because I do not wish to take chances with my safety by crossing there.
I hesitate to suggest that whoever gave the go-ahead to this plan is a driver who rarely walks anywhere, but that is the only conclusion I can reach, because safety doesn’t seem to have been given more than a fleeting thought.
