LAST week we celebrated the 70th anniversary of VE Day. This enabled us to reflect on those people who fought and those who gave their lives so that we could enjoy our freedoms and our democratic way of life.
It was therefore fitting that last Thursday we were able to go and cast our votes to elect a new government.
However, the result is truly unbelievable. We have a situation where Ukip received 3.9 million votes and got one MP. The Greens received 1.1 million votes and got one MP. The SNP received 1.3 million votes and got 56 MPs. Ukip received approximately 13 per cent of the vote and one MP. The Conservatives received three times as much, 36 per cent, and got 310 MPs.
What a perverse election system we have.
Isn’t it about time we had a voting system that reflected the views of the British people? We need to scrap this archaic system and have something that reflects the 21st century.
