IN REPLY to J Adams' letter of May 8 regarding his literal attack on my principles and love of my country, naming one individual, Frank Avenell. I mention that old pensioners’ stalwart as a local hero who speaks his mind in no uncertain terms. As I hope the readers agree, I do the same.

Frank was one of many millions who fought for our freedom. I have great respect and admiration for the many young women and men who put their lives on the line to uphold our democracy in two world wars. Many lost their lives in the fight for freedom, including members of my wife’s family and my own.

Thursday’s General Election proved my point. The smug elite panjandrums of "we know best" were turfed out the door in their droves, not by their leaders, who did not have the courage, but by the universal sense of the British electorate.

Thanks to the people who fought two world wars to free Europe from tyranny, we still have that right.

Regardless of where your vote went, respect the will of the people.
