ON MY normal commute to Gloucester I have to use Elstree Way leading up to the Motorola junction to get onto the A419. On parts of this road there are places where the dual carriageway goes into three lanes. The message I would like to get out there to all of you who don’t fully understand the highway code, is it does not mean it’s now a motorway and the speed limit is 70mph; it’s still a 40mph limit all the way, from start to finish.
In the past, way before we became a part of the Tri Force, I did from time to time see a traffic police officer with a handheld speed gun checking for speeding motorists. I believe this is a thing of the past because all Wiltshire traffic officers are in the Bristol area. How do I know? I got a ticket for doing 34mph in a 30mph zone just before Christmas; 3 points and a £100 fine. Yes, I was guilty your honour.
What I would like to see now and again maybe is can we have one of our Wiltshire traffic officers coming into Wiltshire; use a speed gun on that particular route and you would have a field day. Out of 23 cars that overtook and undertook me, they were all speeding more than 40 mph.
