I WOULD like to express my heartfelt thanks to Royal Wootton Bassett for honouring VE Day on Friday 8 May at their cenotaph, with love, respect and deep gratitude to all who sacrificed their lives in protection of our beloved country from the invasion of Nazi tyranny.

It was a truly memorable service and a joy to be with you all.

However, here at home, I have to ask; why on earth was absolutely nothing organised in Swindon to honour this great historic event that protected our island home and its precious freedoms from the terror of invasion by the brutal Nazi regime in the Second World War?

It truly saddens me that I should have to ask this question.

London and many towns across our country went to great lengths to honour this highly significant milestone in the history of our nation.

Do our country’s children know the meaning of VE Day?

Has it been explained in history lessons?

Did they watch the in-depth television coverage of that highly emotional, euphoric day?

It is absolutely crucial for Swindon to prioritise and honour the history of our nation. Victory in Europe deserves salutations of the highest esteem as do the 400,000 young lives that were sacrificed in protection of our precious country and her core values.

With my profound gratitude to your exceptional, in-depth columnist Barrie Hudson, who alone honoured VE Day through the power of the written word.

MARY RATCLIFFE Old Town, Swindon
