THERE’S a lot to be said for the technological wonders of the modern world, but some of the best pleasures are far simpler.
Give or take the clothing and some of the equipment, those on offer at the Little Big Festival in the Town Gardens were more or less the same as might have been experienced a century or two ago.
The games, the arts workshops, the art displays and the performances by Commonweal School pupils are all part of the timeless fabric of community life.
South Swindon MP Robert Buckland correctly observed that it is rapidly becoming an important part of the local cultural calendar.
As such, the Little Big Festival takes its place alongside other Swindon community events such as the Mela — which we fervently hope will return — and Pride.
What those older and bigger events have in common with smaller ones such as the Little Big Festival is that they would not be possible without the efforts of local people willing to go the extra mile for their community.
Everybody involved in organising and producing the Little Big Festival falls into this category, and so does everybody who came along to join in the fun. We salute them all — not least arts co-ordinator Caroline Day.
As she said: “The level of support from the community, friends and family for the visual artists has been extremely encouraging.”
We hope the Little Big Festival proves to be an inspiration to other people planning their own events, because the more attractions of this kind on offer in Swindon, the better.
Long may the festival continue.
