I FEAR that S Little has missed the point about the proposals for redeveloping the stadium at the County Ground: "Money on players not new stadium" Advertiser May 2.
There seems to be a common misconception that there is a large pot of money available for the club to choose to spend, either on a stadium or on the playing budget. If only that were true.
The reality is that neither the club nor the council have a large pot of money to spend on the stadium.
Any redevelopment will need to be self-financing, as was the case in Swansea.
In the short term, money spent on a modern stadium would have no impact on the club's playing budget. In the long term, if done correctly, the extra revenues that could be generated would enable the club to increase investment in the team in a sustainable way.
It is not a question of investing in one or the other. In the long term either we will have both a modern stadium and investment in the team, or will have no modern facilities and no team to invest in, as the club cannot survive indefinitely in its present form.
A HOUNSELL.
