IN response to Anthony Osborne's article May 9 introducing oak trees to the avenue in The Lawns.
To me, and to all who care passionately about the preservation and conservation of our diminishing countryside, it was very reassuring and uplifting to read this positive, splendid act of awareness and concern for the cultural history of Old Town.
The mighty oak tree has long been an emblem of our nation's strength. The healthy young trees are passionately welcome. In full maturity their sturdy trunks will become a resplendent embrace in the avenue that leads to the tranquility of The Lawns. An idyllic setting for Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Their boughs will offer an archway of shade to visitors needing to pause and rest awhile. A rich haven for our precious wildlife will be established.
No other tree can equal the oak's claim to fame. The decision to restore the park's Victorian splendour is a positive caring act to help safeguard the heritage of Old Town for future generations.
