ON the dribble of letters since the local election; where each writer has said they wanted to vote for a previous writer.

Each thinks they are challenging the establishment.

They claim this in the name of something called "rightful citizens of Great Britain" or "speaking up for the English."

The ridiculousness of this was shown by BF Best with his desperate hope that his little England lose what little independence it has to the USA.

Best's dream is coming true in every respect.

The UK's foreign policy is chosen by the US president.

In addition, great chunks of the Health Service are being handed over to private US corporations. (Privatisation is the cause of the current hospitals crisis).

When they talk about putting England first, do they mean the England of the fat cats who insist that Britain's pensions remain the worst in Europe or the England of the pensioners?

Workers who work the longest, most intensive hours in Europe or their (English) bosses who profit from it?

Nationalism only ever favours those in charge.

I'd prefer to follow the example of the young French workers who recently militantly defended their rights against their bosses and won.

P SMITH.
