THE resurrection of Old Town by Richard Deacon is a delightful concept. We owe it to future generations and, of course, to ourselves, to ensure that Richard’s vision becomes a reality.
We, the residents of Old Town, long to be able to shop in our vicinity once again, in the warm ambience of caring and courtesy which enhanced our lives until neglect and lack of support caused its rapid demise!
Many people have stressed the need for Wood Street to be pedestrianised at specific times. This would enable parents to enjoy shopping with very young children, free from the anxiety of traffic. In fact, the launch of a new Old Town market will, of course, solve the problem for young families.
The gradual decline of Old Town’s former delightful shopping precinct has been heart-breaking to witness over the years and long before the current recession.
If Richard’s dream can become a reality he can rely upon a mighty army of stalwart citizens to support an influx of small shops. While supermarkets are here to stay, they can never replace the joy of a small shop that engenders courtesy, caring and warmth of welcome to all its customers.
Richard talked about the need for civic pride. Where better can this be demonstrated than in the passionate heart of Old Town?
The OTBPA is working desperately hard to ensure that all their current initiatives become a reality. They are assured of our full support, because the regeneration of our beloved Old Town enriches us all and shows great respect for the pioneering business entrepreneurs who created Swindon’s historic jewel in the crown.
