HOW depressing - two new MPs for Swindon (North and South), whose overall support represents barely 43 per cent of Swindon’s population. Of course local Tories will be delighted, but it’s hardly a glowing endorsement, is it?
Over 55 per cent of Swindonians will not be represented in Parliament. At the point of writing, with about 40 results yet to be declared, the Lib Dems plus “others” have secured almost 35 per cent of votes nationally, yet only about 12 per cent of MPs elected. Until there is fundamental and radical reform of the voting system in this country, it will remain undemocratic.
