YESTERDAY I had occasion to speak to two senior citizens who reside in the Swindon South Constituency.
Both said, and I have no reason to disbelieve them, that they have been Labour supporters all of their lives but had not voted for Mrs Snelgrove in the recent General Election.
Out of curiosity I asked them if they would mind telling my why this had been the case. Surprisingly, and they live several miles apart and are unknown to one another, they said that they could not vote for a person who had so blatantly ignored the wishes of constituents.
Explaining further one said that she had stood side by side with Mrs Snelgrove at a demonstration against Post Office closures but when it came to a House of Commons vote she in fact supported the government against an opposition motion.
The other said that he had attended an organized meeting to discuss the need for a referendum on continued membership of the European Union. Over 80 per cent of those present voted in favour of a referendum and Mrs Snelgrove was in fact present at the time. She did not however support this in a Commons vote.
This from memory I believe was also the case with Michael Wills. Both it seems failed to vote in accordance with the wishes of the majority of their constituents.
Let us hope that our two new members of Parliament take heed and do not put party dogma first as appears to have been the case with our two previous members.
