DURING a furore over the failure to deport Leario Chinamo, the man who killed headmaster Philip Lawrence, David Cameron said that the use of the Human Rights Act was a glaring example of what was wrong with modern day Britain.
We are now told that the Human Rights of men planning an Islamic terror attack in this country has saved them from extradition to their homeland of Pakistan.
Thanks to the very same act the terrorist Abu Hamza is still in this country although the United States asked for his extradition to face charges as long ago as August 2004. The cost of keeping him here must be very considerable and at a time when we are all warned of our very fraught financial position.
As part of his coalition agreement with the Liberal Democrats it seems that Mr Cameron has dropped his commitment to repeal this act. As I recall the repeal was part of the Tory manifesto and many who voted Conservative will feel badly let down if to please his new found friends our new Prime Minister goes back on his promise. He should not allow the tail to wag the dog.
The legal system of this land was the envy of the world and was the model for so many countries. Laws made by our parliament should be sacrosanct and to allow them to be overturned by a Strasbourg inspired Human Rights Act should in no way be tolerated.
