I was delighted to read that the council has decided to improve the area around the Wyvern to create a new cultural centre.
I was interested to note that the Princes Street car park is to become a green open space, as many of us will recall this was going to be the site of Swindon’s concert hall.
I am not really sure why the council feels the need to remove the bridge across Fleming Way or the access to the Wyvern; perhaps the detailed plans will explain the logic behind such a decision. What does worry me is that the project is scheduled to take place after phase one of Union Square; that means it won’t happen until the third quarter of 2013 or 2014.
The other real concern is that the timeline is being given by Coun Perkins. This unfortunately leaves me with the distinct feeling that this could simply be yet another one of those ‘initiative’ announcements timed to coincide with the local authority elections.
