Despite being on the end of a 4-2 defeat on Tuesday night, Town’s performances continue to give fans hope for the upcoming season.
As the final whistle echoed around a sparse County Ground on Tuesday, the 4,746 Town fans in attendance gave a standing ovation for their team.
Throughout the entire first half and 30 minutes of the second, Town dominated their opponents all over the pitch, and looked more than equal with a side that ply their trade at a higher level.
It was the best I’ve seen Town keep and pass the ball for a long time, much better than anything that was put in front of us last season.
As predicted at the start of the season, Town’s midfield three have been sensational, Louis Thompson, Yaser Kasim and Massimo Luongo all looked much better than their Championship counterparts.
It was Yaser Kasim’s best performance in a Swindon shirt, his passing was spot on, he won the ball back numerous times, and was he a big threat to the opposition when he came forward with the ball.
So far this season I’ve been a fan of the 5-3-2 system, but at times at the back it seems to cause confusion.
For Brighton’s first goal, their winger managed to escape the attention of Rossi Branco and Byrne far too easily.
There seemed to be some confusion throughout the game, which resulted in him playing an important role for the away side.
Trowbridge-born Jordan Turnbull also had his most nervous game for Town, and looked shaky at times, but overall he’s enjoyed a good start to life in Swindon.
He looks a more complete defender than Grant Hall, and can read the game well, as time and games move on, he’ll become even more important.
After criticizing him last season for his inconsistency, Nathan Byrne has grown and improved as a player in a short amount of time.
There was never a doubt he had something extra in his locker, and he’s now giving us a glimpse.
Like a lot of his teammates around him, he was painfully inconsistent from week to week, but it looks like he’s been working on that, and its beginning to show.
Another player who has surprised many fans this season is Andy Williams, after his loan move to Yeovil; many fans including myself never thought we’d see him again in the red and white of Town, let alone playing well for Town.
But after his long break from the game, he’s now starting to look like the striker who made a huge impact a Yeovil a few years ago.
Williams’ individual goal against Gillingham was a great reminder that he is a really talented player who Di Canio thought would fire Town into the Championship just a couple of years ago.
I’m not suggesting he’ll go on and get 30+ goals, but it can’t be emphasized enough how important him staying injury-free will be for this season.
Lastly, I want to make a plea to all Town fans who have decided not to come back this season, firstly I understand last season wasn’t overly inspiring, and as time went on, the season slipped away.
But this season Town have really stepped it up a gear, and are playing really attractive football.
I understand ticket prices are a problem, and I agree it is too expensive, but please keep your eye out for some ticket incentives over the season and come back to SN1, you won’t regret it.
