A FRUSTRATING 0-0 draw, chances squandered, a sour atmosphere around the ground, and a result leaving Town in 22nd place.
These are all aspects of last weekend, but they’re also a repeat from early March 2011 when Swindon drew 0-0 with Walsall, a season where Town lost their battle to avoid the drop.
When the full-time whistle went in last Saturday’s Oldham game, the realisation that Town’s future could lie in League Two next season finally hit me.
This season is echoing more and more the events of six years ago, when Paul Hart failed to keep us up.
You could easily argue our squad of 2010/11 was a better one than Luke Williams has to work with today.
But the biggest difference from then to now is the ability Town have at their disposal up front.
Despite our disappointing league finish last season the club possessed one of the best striking partnerships in League One.
With Nicky Ajose returning this season after a forgettable time at Charlton, and Jonathan Obika overcoming his injury woes, the club has the tools to lift themselves out of the mire they find themselves in.
However last weekend they looked a shadow of their former selves as time and again they missed chances they would’ve comfortably scored 12 months ago.
We all know they are both talented strikers, so let’s hope they can rediscover their match-winning form.
Without them firing on all cylinders, you can count Swindon as relegated already.
On the plus side from last weekend it seems Town have found the missing piece of the puzzle in midfield, as Rohan Ince made his home debut and was rightly named man of the match.
The 24-year-old former Chelsea trainee was superb from kick-off to his substitution.
He added the extra muscle, class and passion we’ve been missing from the heart of the side all season.
It’s imperative he’s involved in all the remaining games of this season, starting with Town’s trip to bottom side Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena this weekend.
