As the final time whistle went at the County Ground on Saturday there was a strange feeling around the ground, people were smiling… looking happy… and even… clapping the team of the field. Then it hit me, Swindon Town had won a home game.

It’s been a long 250 days since we’ve experienced a home win and it was a brilliant way to start the Paolo Di Canio era.

After a poor 44 minutes of action from Town, Billy Bodin weaved his way through the Crewe defence and won Town a penalty, which was put away expertly by Callum Kennedy.

But after an underwhelming first half display Town dominated the following 45 minutes.

The new midfield pairing of Jonathan Smith and Oliver Risser looked superb with both players winning the ball back quickly after the team lost possession and finding Timlin and Richie well on the wings.

Both Smith and Risser will have to keep there performance levels high with quality players like Alan McCormack and Simon Ferry both wanting to be in Town’s first eleven.

But after an amazing goal from Risser, which doubled Town’s lead, I don’t think his place is in danger yet.

Also once again Matt Richie played a huge role on the pitch, with new right-winger Etienne Esajas injured Richie will have to keep playing on the more unfamiliar right hand side of midfield.

But after Saturday’s performance I don’t think Paolo will be worrying too much.

My personal highlight from Saturday’s game was the quality of the defending in the second half, after a shaky start Joe Devera became better as the game went on, but the highlight of the day was Aden Flint’s all round performance throughout the whole 90 minutes.

After joining in January this year Aden wasn’t given a proper chance to shine last season but on Saturday we all got to see what a good player and future talent we have at the club.

Aden fully deserved his man of the match award for his defending and goal, which gave Town a convincing 3-0 win.

With Alberto Comazzi now available again, Di Canio will have a tough decision to decide who starts at Cheltenham on Saturday.

One of the clubs biggest bogey teams since they became a football league club, Town have only managed one win in six matches, and have never won a game at Whaddon Road.

But I’d expect that to change on Saturday.
