Lloyds must reconsider closing their Old Town branch, says a local disabled user of the bank.

In a letter to the Advertiser and the regional Lloyds boss, the Swindonian said that the branch is easily accessible.

The bank is due to close on February 3, 2025 with 27 other closures across the UK as Lloyds says customers move to mobile and online banking.

The author of the letter wished to remain anonymous.

She said: “I am asking the regional director of Lloyds [Amanda Dorel] to reconsider closing this branch for the following reasons.

“I am a disabled customer and your Old Town branch is so easy for the disabled, you have safe parking, a short entrance and really kind staff.

“Also noise level at your Old Town branch is tolerable.

“Please, I do not do online, I am not tech-minded. So please reconsider.

“I am sure I am not the only disabled person that appreciates your Old Town branch.”

Similar calls have come from users of the bank who value its accessibility.

Maureen Johnston, 86, said the closure will be a "disaster" for elderly people depend on having a nearby physical branch.

Maureen takes a taxi to the branch every three weeks, with Old Town’s on-site parking minimising the distance she has to walk when visiting.

She says alternative branches suggested by Lloyds - the Brunel Centre or the Victoria Road Post Office - do not have nearby available parking.

Maureen, who has banked at the branch since 1937, said she would not be confident using online or mobile banking.

She said: “Lloyds should keep this branch open for the actual convenience of the customers.

“They should be true and sincere and want to do everything they can for their loyal customers.”

Lloyds says that 82 per cent of customers already use other banking methods, like mobile, internet or phone banking, as well as other branches.

It adds that transactions at the Swindon Old Town branch have fallen more than 57 per cent between 2019 and 2024.

A Lloyds spokesperson said: "Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead.

"This means they are using branches, including our Swindon Old Town branch much less. Because of this, we'll be closing our Swindon branch."

The Old Town closure comes just four months after it was announced that Lloyds in Marlborough, the town's last High Street bank, would close.
